There Is A Method to the Madness
Why We Keep Moving Despite What Turtles Might Teach Us
Welcome to there is a Method to the Madness. My name is Rob Maxwell and I'm an exercise physiologist and personal trainer. I am the owner of Maxwell's Fitness Programs and I've been in business since 1994. The purpose of this podcast is to get to the real deal of what really works and, most importantly, why things work. Hence the name there is a Method to the Madness. Before I get started today, let me thank Jonathan and Lynn Gilden of the Gilden Group Realty Pros. They are committed to providing the highest level of customer service in home sales. Why don't you give them a shout and figure out what your home is worth? 386-451-2412. Good morning and good afternoon to my fine fitness people out there. You are listening to this on April 1st 25.
Speaker 1:So you know I rant a lot about social media and stay off social media as far as your fitness influencers go. But you know I have to tell you something. I saw something on there that has completely changed my mind on that and I just think there's a lot of truth to it. So I'm going to read to you this meme that I saw the other day and I shared it because you know what man, this is just true. So the meme goes rabbits jump and they live for eight years. Dogs run and they live for 15 years. Turtles do nothing and they lived. They live for 150 years. Lesson learned, I mean. I mean I guess there's truth to that, right. I mean turtles essentially don't move a lot, right? I mean, unfortunately, they go out onto the street and us carrying people stop our cars to help them move out of the street. I mean part of that is because they don't move very fast. And then the other part is they panic and, you know, go into their shell. But there's just truth to it. I mean, they don't move and they also also not only do they outlive almost every species, their evolution is amazing, like they go back and they're one of the first creatures on earth.
Speaker 1:So maybe turtles have had it right all along and maybe we're wrong, like maybe I, I'm wrong and you know what, sometimes we have to do that. We have to go back and reflect and admit when we've been wrong. I mean this is proof that taking care of ourselves being fit, maybe it's just stupid, maybe, you know, we just wasted our time. I mean, you know, growing up we always heard about our Uncle Albert who, like, drank a 12-pack of beer every day and he smoked three packs of cigarettes every day and he, you know, snorted cocaine on the way to school every day. And you know, this man lived until he was like 108. Like, we've all had those uncles right. I mean, god, I have right and you're like.
Speaker 1:So what's the point of going to the gym every day? What is the point of eating low fat, low sugar foods? What's the point of jogging and walking? I mean, the turtle proves it's BS, it doesn't work.
Speaker 1:And I'm just trying to tell you I have to get this off my mind because, look, I've been telling you people, at least in this podcast, for three years now, maybe two years, something like that, and I've been working in the personal training industry for 31 years, telling everybody you need to move to have a better quality of life and potentially help you with longevity. You need to strength, train to have a better quality of life and ADLs and look better and feel better. And, flat out, I've been wrong. The bunnies that jump have been duped. The dogs that run for that live to be 15 years, well, you know what they would have if they would have done nothing. I mean, just ask the turtle, by the way. I love turtles, I've always loved turtles, and now they have taught me a major lesson Fitness is phooey, it doesn't work. Turn around now, run All right, april fools, april fools.
Speaker 1:Hopefully you have picked up on that, considering I said it in the very, very beginning because, god you know, I was thinking about this. I wanted to do this, I thought it'd be fun. It is fun, and but there's part of me that are like you know, some people are like I don't know, like so naive, like they're only going to listen to the first part of this, and then there's everybody's going to be like talking that like I've turned my back on fitness, which is so ridiculous to think that even anybody's talking about me whatsoever. But anyway, it was a little bit of a you know apprehension, but anyway, all is fun, of course. Course this isn't true. Now, I did see that meme and I do think it's funny and I sent it to a few people. Um, I mean it is funny, right, I mean it's just funny.
Speaker 1:But the bottom line is this is April Fool's, and you know what? I love fitness. I have not changed my mind the turtle is the turtle, because not only does the turtle not move a lot, it actually moves all the time, it just moves really really slow. So, rabbits, you keep jumping, doggies you keep running, turtles you keep walking. But please stop walking out in front of cars, because you know what I want to keep you all alive. Kitty cats keep running around, keep jumping up on counters. You do what you do. People keep moving every day. Keep making good food choices and keep going to the gym. All right, have a great April Fool's Day and I will talk to you next time.
